Natural aging is affected by external factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, general health and sun exposure but there are also important internal factors that impact on the natural aging process. These internal factors relate to the presence of certain substances within the skin or structures in the body. The 3 important substances that give an appearance of youthfulness are Hyaluronic Acid, Elastin and Collagen. The 2 important structures that give an appearance of youthfulness are the collections of fat underneath the skin and the strong supportive bony skeleton that lies underneath the fat.
When we are younger, we have an abundance of the substances in our skin and a strong supportive effect from the structures underneath the skin – this keeps the skin smooth, hydrated, plump and ‘lifted’ with ability to ‘spring back’ to its original appearance after movement. However, these substances and structures are being naturally broken down as we age and the speed that they are broken down is impacted upon by the external factors listed above. Combine this degradation of essential anti-aging substances with the failure for our body to reform these substances together with the loss of fat and bone and we see wrinkles and grooves forming on the face with a ‘downward’ sliding of skin and the development of ‘loose sagging’ skin with sunken areas and a flatness to the cheeks.
To stimulate collagen deep within the skin or near the bony areas of the face, an injectable collagen stimulator is needed to ‘kick start’ the production of new collagen. Collagen stimulators work by introducing a substance into an area which can produce a reaction in the tissues similar to the reaction you get after an injury. This reaction is really an irritation and inflammation of the tissues to trigger the body’s natural healing response. Part of the natural healing response is to produce new collagen in the area affected. The production of new collagen takes several weeks to occur but ultimately creates a longer lasting ‘filling’ or ‘volumising’ effect in an area.
Areas commonly injected with a collagen stimulator include:
This treatment involves the injection of a product that is made up of small particles. The particles are mixed with sterile water 48 hrs prior to the treatment to create a cloudy suspension and then injected into specific areas on the face and decolletage. The particles create a ‘reaction’ in the tissues where it has been injected and the body is triggered to produce new collagen in the area. This effect can last for 18 months to 3 years in some cases and the product has been specifically designed to stimulate your own new collagen to give you a long lasting natural looking appearance. As it is totally biodegradable over time, it will be replaced by the body’s own tissues and be naturally resorbed by the body. It can be injected into the skin to fill out wrinkles & deep skin folds, correct the contour of jawline, correct hollows or chin creases and enhance the size of the cheeks. It cannot be injected in the lips or around the eyes.
Collagen stimulators rely on your body’s own ability to produce collagen and results from a collagen stimulant can therefore vary from person to person and treatment to treatment. It is not a treatment that can be done on anyone and your cosmetic practitioner will discuss your general health in a complimentary consultation before planning your treatment date and will advise I this is not a recommended treatment for your particular concerns.
The product used in this treatment is totally synthetic, which means you can get treated immediately without any allergy test prior to the treatment. The amount of product required will depend upon your own expectations and the area to be treated but the product is packaged in single vials that are mixed with sterile water 48 hrs before your treatment to produce approximately 9mls of collagen stimulant. Because the product must be pre mixed before your treatment you will need to pre pay for the treatment when arranging your booking. It is important to plan this treatment as there is a high risk of bruising due to the increased number of individual injections needs to inject 9ml of product. Bruising will settle over 1-10 days depending on the severity of the bruising.
It is important to remember that the area treated will immediately look fuller and more volumised from the sterile water but this immediate effect will disappear after a few hours. The area will then look exactly as it did prior to the treatment. Don’t worry, this is exactly how the product is supposed to work.
At 6-8 weeks after the treatment, the collagen stimulating effect of the product will start to occur. New collagen strands will form and become organized to recreate the fullness that was seen immediately after the injections were done. No further injections of this product will be done before 3 months to avoid the risk of ‘overcorrecting’ and ‘over stimulating’ collagen within the area. Other temporary dermal fillers can occasionally be injected if you have a special event or particular need to ‘see a difference’ quickly but this product is for a ‘long term’ effect not a short term correction.
At 3-6 months further product may be injected but the quantity should be kept to a minimum because the peak collagen stimulation will probably occur from 6-9 months after the treatment. The final effects of the treatment can last for 18 months to 3 years in some cases. Duration of effect varies from patient to patient and is dependent upon the area treated, quality of skin, volume injected and age of the client. On average, the product itself will be completely metabolised by the body within 12 months, however the new collagen formed can last up to 3 years in some cases.
