Skin is constantly being attacked! By environmental factors such as sun-damage, dehydration & pollutants. By social and personal habits such as smoking, drinking, swimming in chlorinated pools, going to the beach or spending long periods of time in the sun. By genetic traits, ill-health and the obvious issues with the natural aging process.

Skin can become dull and pigmented with open pores and congestion.., your skin finds its production and growth of collagen (a component in the skin which gives the skin its plumpness) markedly reduced. The skin on your face, your neck, your décolletage and your hands shows signs of drying out becoming dull and dehydrated. As a result, the skin is more susceptible to the appearance of wrinkles and lines. The texture of the skin has deteriorated and the elasticity and tone is poor. Open pores have become more dominant and that youthful radiance has been replaced with a more tired appearance.

Areas commonly treated with Dermapen Skin Needling include:

  • Eyes – the fine wrinkles that form around and underneath the eyes from facial expression can be very effectively treated with Dermapen;.
  • Mouth area – Dermapen treatments can soften vertical lip or ‘smokers lines’ and help smooth out dimpled and crepey skin.
  • Face – Dermapen can be used as a generalised treatment on the skin of the face to stimulate the production of collagen & elastin and give the skin a smoother more radiant texture and tone. Dermapen will help to smooth out wrinkles, reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, improve skin texture, reduce brown pigmentation and help reverse the signs of sun-damage and aging;
  • Neck & Décolletage – when Dermapen is injected underneath the chin and on the neck and décolletage, it will create a ‘tightening’ effect which will lift the skin and smooth out fine wrinkles.
  • Hands – Dermapen is often used to counteract the visible signs of aging seen on the backs of hands.
  • Scalp – an effective treatment to stimulate dormant hair follicles and regrow hair where there has been premature hair loss and hair thinning.
  • Stretch marks – Dermapen helps to smooth out stretch marks and improve the discolouration and poor skin texture associated with stretch marks.
  • Scarring – an effective treatment to improve traumatic, surgical and acne scarring and the treatment is greatly enhanced by the additional use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).

Skin needling is a minimally invasive results orientated treatment. This procedure involves the use of an automated electric Dermapen with microscopic needles up to 2.5mm in length and the technology is derived from ancient acupuncture techniques. As the needles penetrate the skin, tiny punctures are created within the epidermis and dermis that encourage the skin’s own natural healing response. When the skin is mechanically traumatised in a controlled manner, it will naturally start to heal itself. This healing process stimulates the production of new collagen fibres which in turn, make the treated area look more plump and smooth. The mechanical trauma can also break up collections of brown pigment or Melanin in the skin so that these fragments can be naturally reabsorbed by the body. In addition to this, if Dermapen skin needling is performed over a scar, it can help to break down the scar tissue and improve the colour, texture and overall appearance of the scar.

Skin Needling is also sometimes known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT). It has similar results to Fractionated Laser Resurfacing but is far less invasive, which translates to a far lower risk of complications and a quicker recovery time. Improvement in the appearance of the skin is achieved through a series of Dermapen Skin Needling treatments, spaced 6-8 weeks apart. Dermapen Skin Needling is a cost effective skin rejuvenation treatment option with minimal downtime. In comparison to prolonged recovery time from laser resurfacing and chemical peels, the short recovery following Skin Needling makes it an excellent alternative method for reversing visible signs of aging and sun damage as well as treating various forms of scarring.

Dermapen skin Needling can be performed on large or small areas, areas of severe scarring and hard-to-reach places (e.g. around the eyes, nose, and lips). The Dermapen creates multiple tiny pin point puncture wounds into the epidermis and dermis. This physical trauma stimulates the release of growth factors that stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin. New collagen production is the object of ALL skin resurfacing and rejuvenation treatments but Dermapen Skin Needling creates dermal damage without the removal of the healthy epidermis, which happens with other resurfacing techniques. Because the epidermis is left intact, the healing period is more rapid. The skin does not risk permanent structural damage.

Dermapen Skin Needling can treat sensitive areas that other treatments have to avoid, such as below the eyes, the neck and the back of hands. It can be performed on all skin types and all colours and on all parts of the body.

The treatment can be done without any anaesthetic where small areas are being treated or where the depth of the needle penetration is small. However, where a larger or more sensitive area is treated or the needles are penetrating deeper, the treatment is carried out using topical anaesthetic cream, which is applied 90 minutes before the skin needling is done.

After the treatment, skin may appear red, swollen, moist and sensitive for several days depending on the area treated and the depth of the needles used in your particular treatment. A light graze consisting of tiny crusted areas that feel rough and look tanned may occur. Skin may feel tight and dry with flaking or peeling as the healing process progresses. The depth of needle used may have been varied within your particular treatment depending on the problem been treated and severity of that problem within a local area. Most patients are able to return to work and normal activities within 48 hours of treatment.

Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Peptides are essential for collagen production and sun damage reversal. It is essential that you apply skin cosmeceuticals containing these ingredients to achieve a high concentration of them within the skin and maximise the results you will get from your skin needling treatment. A hyaluronic acid and Vitamin B can also be used on the skin after skin needling treatments for fine lines and wrinkles to infuse the skin and create a ‘plumping effect’. ASAP soothing gel and/or Laser Aid will then be placed on the skin to soothe any redness and ease the feeling of warmth that is felt immediately after the treatment. ASAP Soothing Gel and/or Skinstitut Laser Aid will also be placed on the skin to aid in the healing process post treatment. The post treatment redness can be covered with mineral make-up later the next day.

Home treatment rollers are advisable and available for purchase from your cosmetic practitioner together with Skinstitut Rejuvenate 15 (Copper Peptide) serum, Vitamin A, C & B serums and a suitable sunscreen/moisturiser. Home care treatment rollers have much shorter needles which only microscopically break the surface of the skin without any residual redness or bruising. When used with your regular skin care routine, this will assist with absorption of any skin treatments and enable you to get maximum benefit from skin care and skin treatment products. It is also very important that you drink plenty of water in the weeks following your skin needling treatment.

Multiple treatments are usually necessary to achieve significant improvement in the appearance and depth of lines and scars. Treatment effects are cumulative and results will usually be seen within 6-8 weeks after the treatment.
