Although the effects of aging are commonly associated with more mature skins often the effects of sun damage are seen at an earlier age. Sun damage can create changes in the colour, tone and texture of younger and more mature skins with the presence of patchy brown pigmentation, dull lifeless looking skin, fine lines and wrinkles. In addition to the effects from sun damage, oily skins can show dilated open pores with congestion, pimples and ‘marks ‘on the skin where larger pimples have healed.
Here are some of the concerns which can be improved by Microdermabrasion treatments:
Dr Lindsey’s ‘HOT TIP’ – if you have never experienced a microdermabrasion and are curious but apprehensive about having cosmetic treatments then please treat yourself to a microdermabrasion. In my opinion it is the most basic facial rejuvenation treatment with virtually no down time or risks. It is also the least expensive treatment (about the same price as a facial) and as a Cosmetic Physician a flawless radiant skin will often detract from the occasional wrinkle or line!
Sometimes called the ‘lunchtime peel’, this is a non-invasive, gentle process of using crystals blown onto the skin’s surface to mechanically exfoliate layers of dead and damaged skin cells. After crystals are blown onto the skin, a vacuum suction whisks them away and the unwanted dead skin to leave your skin looking smoother, brighter, firmer and with a course of procedures blemish free. At Rejuven8 Cosmetix our Registered Cosmetic Nurses and Dermal Therapists are qualified to perform extractions during your Microdermabrasion treatment which involves the use of a sterile curette to physical clean out any dead skin plugs that are present in blocked pores that cause the pore to be wide and dilated. They will also extract any collections of pus and oily sebum that can be seen in whiteheads and pimples.
You will see an immediate visible result of youthful radiance and an improvement to dull and stressed looking skin even after one procedure of microdermabrasion. However a program will be advised depending on your skin’s condition and aesthetic goals. A program helps maintain an even brighter, clearer and healthier looking skin. Microdermabrasion forms part of a regular acne program and can achieve great results in acne scarring.
Microdermabrasion increases microcirculation, bringing nutrients to the skin. Regular microdermabrasion procedures offer exceptional opportunities for skin to be nourished and replenished with an increase in penetration of homecare creams and serums 4 – 5 times more than skin not treated with Microdermabrasion. Your cosmetic practitioner will recommend a professional cosmetic maintenance program, which will include appropriate sun protection and additional skin treatments.
Although a microdermabrasion is a fantastic treatment on its own, it can be combined with other treatments in a treatment program. It is commonly combined with a Facial Peels and Facial Resurfacers, some can be performed immediately after a microdermabrasion and others at separate treatments – the type of peel/resurfacer used can be tailor-made for you by your cosmetic practitioner.
Microdermabrasions can be combined with IPL, known as a Crystal Limelight IPL rejuvenation treatment. This is an intensely rejuvenating treatment that can help correct discolouration on the skin in fair skin types and is a popular treatment to be done prior to a special event such as a wedding. It can also be combined with Laser Genesis, known as a Crystal Genesis Rejuvenation to treat red and brown discolouration and scarring on all skin types. It is recommended that you refrain from any cosmetic procedures such as anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers at least 7 days prior to your microdermabrasion treatment. Some injectable treatments can be done immediately after a Microdermabrasion treatment depending on whether a facial peel has also been applied and your cosmetic therapist will be able to advise you of appropriate timing of those treatments. Waxing is not recommended 2 days prior to or 7 days after the procedure. Remember that any spray tan or self-tanning creams will be removed by the microdermabrasion and it is advisable to not reapply fake tanning agents to the skin for 5-7 days after the treatment possibly longer if a facial peel has been applied.
We strongly advise against the use of sun beds and swimming in heavily chlorinated water for at least 2 weeks after microdermabrasion has been performed.
